Danziger Gallery
Danziger Gallery is pleased to announce representation of American artist Mickey Smith. These large scale color still lifes – part sculptural, part text based – vividly bring to life the stored volumes with power, humor, or surprise. Smith’s nuanced responses to what she discovers, alongside the consistent quality of the works create a fresh take on the conceptual still life. The gallery’s first presentation of her work will be at the AIPAD photography fair this April, but we are pleased to now share a range of works on our website.
Open Studio 23
A resident of Devonport since 2012, Mickey’s 2023 DEPOT Open Studio will include a preview of large scale works from her new series Domesticated, featuring a preview of images made in Devonport’s beloved secondhand bookshop, Bookmark. Works from her other long term projects and a selection of pieces from her Daily Reminder jewellery collection will also be on display. Open Friday 5-7pm, Saturday 10-4pm, Sunday 10-2pm.
Artist-in-Residence
Mickey Smith’s exhibition at the Law Warschaw Gallery at Macalester College in St. Paul, MN, is developed from a multi-faceted, collaborative approach through a series of campus visits and meetings with staff, faculty, and students from across disciplines. The second in a three part, multiyear residency, we have engaged in an ongoing conversation about the library’s deaccession and disposal of the bound periodical collection.
The resulting solo exhibition, Mickey Smith: Platform, opens September 2024 and tours through 2026.
HoSpice Vintner's Brunch
Thanks to the intuition of a savvy auctioneer, three generous collectors, and a room full of supporters cheering us all on, $29,000 was raised from the sale of MOBY DICK from the Library of Greg Barton. 100% of the proceeds go toward caring for the patients and families of Harbour HoSpice. More information can be found on this project here.
PechaKeucha Auckland
PechaKeucha Auckland presents The Real #64 // 20 images x 20 seconds. We spend our days and nights in a world of concepts, intermediated by screens. Our communications bubble across the ether in 120 characters, and every image is a question more than an answer. We don't know what is true, but we need truth as a foundation to create from. So how do we keep our connection to The Real? Nine creatives share their work, and how they keep it real. You can now watch Mickey’s presentation here.

Obscura Foundry Commission @ NFT Art Biennale in Venice
The Obscura Foundry Commission is now being displayed in Venice thanks to the NFT Art Biennale at the European Cultural Center, supported by Superchief Gallery NFT, Art Blocks, Bright Moments, and Obscura. One of the first photographic commissions ever created for the blockchain, TIME & AGAIN was one of five First Generation Foundry Photographic Commissions on view. TIME & AGAIN explores the passage of time, grief and preservation of memory through the visual metaphor of the library. Although the collection of 25 NFTs has sold out, a print edition of the work is being prepared for exhibition in the 2022 Aotearoa Art Fair.
Of Body and Mind
Gallery Lulo is thrilled to announce our upcoming show with New Zealand based conceptual artist Mickey Smith. The show entitled "Of Body and Mind" includes seven limited edition, large scale photographs, taken in the time between 2004 and 2022, as well as a selection of Mickey's works in jewellery.
NEW OUTLOOK
Mickey Smith’s NEW OUTLOOK exhibition explores the current atmosphere of post-pandemic Aotearoa. The books she has documented are not touched, artificially lit or manipulated — rather composed by the librarian and found by the artist in stacks — left as positioned by the last reader. Smith’s playful use of language and scale transcend the spines on which they appear to create conceptual, anthropological works, which document a significant moment in time, and indeed in Aotearoa’s history.
Summer Exhibition
Sanderson Contemporary’s Summer Show brings gallery artists together at the end of each year to exhibit their latest works.
Sydney Contemporary
Pleased to have work represented by Sanderson in Sydney Contemporary, Australasia’s premier art fair. As much as we would all like to hop a plane Sydney, the fair will be held online this year. With 80 participating galleries from Australia and New Zealand. Explore presents a digital edition of Sydney Contemporary: experience the Fair and buy art anywhere, anytime.
Library of Obsolescence NFT Collection
Included in my NFT Genesis collection on OpenSea includes some of the most iconic titles of the 20th century, together creating an assembly of cultural archives lost. Each NFT is part of a triptych of the same title, and collectively all three create a set that will be brought together and disbursed along the blockchain, referencing their movement in the physical world. Library of Obsolescence presents a shift in cultural values; the spines are mantras of particular moments in our history and take on new meaning as repositories for the future.
KIA ORA
While the Minnesotans kiss summer goodbye and the Europeans wrap up month long holidays, Covid-19 has finally reached the shores of New Zealand. Now it is our turn for we wait for case numbers to drop and vaccination numbers to rise. Auckland was in total lockdown for the month, making this a great time to rebuild a website… Many thanks to Cameron Gibb for applying his impeccable design skills to the effort.
